WE HAVE TONS OF COOL STUFF TO SELL, TRADE OR GIFT!!! Lots of tribal
Bellydance costuming, Burner costuming, and funky clothes! Random other
stuff... some furniture, fabric and art supplies- anyone want an old cast
iron wood stove? It's yours if you have the means to move it!

AND we will have our new Shakra DVD for sale as well as the Gothic
Bellydance DVD and our remaining stock of Shakra T-shirts.

Bring a snack, beers, a cooler, whatever would make you happy while we
chill outside. We will have a couple big coolers and some booze and
snacks as well as a few tables and camp chairs. Feel free to bring
chairs, a table for your stuff or a blanket to throw things on- we have a
lot of space in our backyard.

Please feel free to post this wherever and pass it on to anyone who would
be interested!

Hello to our peeps on this beautiful Friday! We just received word that Shakra was selected to teach and perform at the first annual BellyFusion Festival in Paris, France!! (Hmmm…I guess that France part is kinda obvious) We're super excited about the venture across the Atlantic, and can't wait to share our fusion style with our friends in Europe! C'est magnifique !

For this first edition of the international BellyFusions Festival, two complementary aspects will be presented: on the one hand, a unique show gathering artists who will teach during the event and on the other hand, two days of workshops representing the diversity of styles.

A myriad of hybrid styles are now emerging from the encounter of Egyptian Oriental Dance with other forms of art and dance. These styles are becoming deeply interwoven with one another, allowing a mutual artistic enrichment and an opening onto the contemporary world. The Bellyfusions Festival aims to make a wider audience discover these mutations and enable them to understand and appreciate them.

The first French Festival dedicated to these fusions in oriental dances, the BellyFusions Festival will be above all a new event in France, where artists will be able to show their latest creations or even experimentations during a special evening show.

(part 1) Powerful music needs powerful moves. In the first part of this class, Shakra will show you new and exhilarating movements to bring strength, power and the need for speed into your dance, especially for those times when the music calls for more "umph"! Be warned! We will jump, shout, twist, stomp, slide, bend, drop, stretch, fling, toss and shake.
(part 2)For the second part of this workshop, let Shakra lead you on a dark and creepy creative adventure, showing you how to add an extra dimension to your dance.

Title: Transfusion drills, combos and choreography

Skill Level: Open to all levels, but previous dance experience will be helpful

Come sweat and stomp with Shakra! (Oh how our little dark hearts love to stomp.) This high energy and cardiovascular workshop will give you a crash course to Transfusion Dance. We’ll be focusing on the Afro-Industrial fusion side of Shakra’s style, which is heavily influenced by African dance, but incorporates other high energy movements from donor styles such as Bhangera, Hip Hop, Modern, and Bellydance. This side of Transfusion Dance will focus on bringing power and extension into your movements and embrace the need for speed when working with powerful and fast beats. We will start with a brief introduction to the philosophy behind Tranfusion Dance. Then, after a “get your blood pumping” warm-up to industrial beats, we’ll start in on ass-kicking drills, big movements, powerful combos, and tie it all together with a short choreography.

This dvd will feature a workout based on our unique brand of fusion style dance, and will make you sweat as we like to sweat. The dvd will feature music from artists such as Maduro, :Wumpscut:, The Last Dance, Decoded Feedback, and Terrorfakt.

Advice! Recommendations! Horror Stories!

I'm getting to travel this Spring and I'm so excited... gonna be spending a week in Barcelona and then a week in Paris. I've got a list of stuff to seek out... but wanted to see if anyone had any special recommendations for things not to miss! I think we will be mostly staying in the cities... but also taking some day trips to nearby areas... especially if they are really damned cool.

clean up/load out - 7:00-7:30

First of all Thank you to all of the PEX family who support our crazy art and were excellent hosts throughout the adventures of the evening.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to watch us dance, especially the folks that drove all the way from DC, Richmond and NY to support us. I'm sorry some of you missed the dance, but there was so much fun stuff going on all at once all evening. I caught a lot of great performances, but I know there were many that I totally missed seeing.

Did anyone get any pictures of us stomping and sweating?

P.S. The other performances I did see were amazing!! The breakdancing/ Capoeira.... the fire spear piece... and all of the fire dancers! I can't wait to see video footage!

Hello everyone!

Sending you all lots of good stuff for the coming year. I have a feeling that 2008 is going to be incredible! Shakra has all sorts of evil top secret things in the works.... on top of being so super excited about adventuring out to Tribal Fest to teach, perform and play!

On a personal note, I'm getting to finally go back to Europe in the springtime! It's been (gasp) over 10 years since I was there in college traveling, learning, expanding, adventuring... becoming a person. Cael and I are going to be in Barcelona for a week and then Paris for a week! I can't wait!

AND I want to make 2008 a year of true focus and growth for me in many ways.

What exciting things do you guys have coming up for this new year?? What are your intentions for 2008?

In the first part of this class, Shakra will show you new and exhilarating movements to bring strength, power and the need for speed into your dance, especially for those times when the music calls for more "umph"! Be warned! We will jump, shout, twist, stomp, slide, bend, drop, stretch, fling, toss and shake.
(part 2)For the second part of this workshop, let Shakra lead you on a dark and creepy creative adventure, showing you how to add an extra dimension to your dance.

Come sweat and stomp with Shakra! (Oh how our little dark hearts love to stomp.) This high energy and cardiovascular workshop will give you a crash course to Transfusion Dance. We’ll be focusing on the Afro-Industrial fusion side of Shakra’s style, which is heavily influenced by African dance, but incorporates other high energy movements from donor styles such as Bhangera, Hip Hop, Modern, and Bellydance. This side of Transfusion Dance will focus on bringing power and extension into your movements and embrace the need for speed when working with powerful and fast beats. We will start with a brief introduction to the philosophy behind Tranfusion Dance. Then, after a “get your blood pumping” warm-up to industrial beats, we’ll start in on ass-kicking drills, big movements, powerful combos, and tie it all together with a short choreography.

The amazing duo from the north is gracing us with their presence here in DC, Sunday Dec 8th for a tribal fusion belly dance workshop! And following the workshop we'll be celebrating the holidays at our HOLIDAY HAFLA! open to people interested the tribal belly dance community in the DC area!

Melanie and Karin began their history together as a collaboration for a New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom performance. From there, the duo Kassar was born. They have been dancing together as Kassar for the past seven years, all the while studying with numerous instructors of the tribal persuasion. Between them, they also bring a background rich in formal ballet training, West African dance, tango fusion and Indian dance technique. This has culminated in the development of their own unique, highly-acclaimed style of tribal bellydance. Kassar has since grown to both teach workshops and perform nationwide. For anyone who wants to join Eastwinds Tribal Drumming's pre-registered group "Beach Blanket Beledi" at the 25th Annual Mermaid Parade this Saturday , June 23rd in Coney Island, Brooklyn:

Here are some important details:

Cost: YES!!!! there is a $10 per person fee to march.. (There may be a discount if we get a large number...if that happens, it'll be a happy surprise! Plan on $10 just to be sure, ok?!) Our pre-registered group, which is called "BEACH BLANKET BELEDI," welcomes anybody and everybody OVER 18. Please note: Jeff & I are not making any money on this whatsoever-all fees go to the Mermaid Parade, to support the insanity that is Coney Island.

Time: Jeff & I will be there at 10 A.M. because I'm an anal retentive control freak...and... we want to make sure we get a good marching "spot" (not too close to anybody else's music, fer example.) We will be leading the ME percussion - we'd encourage the drummers to meet us no later than 1 pm... or not.. We would appreciate RIQ players...but any percussion is good. Remember...long parade, hot sun...plan ahead, my darlings!!!! Dancers can show up whenever the heck you like...it's all good! Just make sure you sign in and pay the nice Mermaid Parade folks. (BTW, zills...always a good parade idea!)

Finding us: I'll be l be dressed in Pirate/ Tribal garb, and wearing a small davul and a big smile. Jeff will be the big piratety-looking guy playing the AWESOME lead doumbek riffs. If anybody wants to make/carry a "Beach Blanket Beladi" sign, go for it! It's really crowded...you might want to arrive before 1pm...(Casey's left eye starts to twitch in anticipation of people showing up whenever they want..) Seriously, you REALLY might consider 1:15 at the very latest (noticible tremor starts in upper lip area.)

WARNING: Every year, some girls parade in pasties and other burlesque-style attire. There may be girls who will be scantily clad in our merry little band. Our group is strictly for OVER 18. Additionally, "Sheik of Araby" and "Gotta Go Back to Constantinople" way be spontaneously played on kazoo. Ok, you've been warned!

This is what happened this past wednesday night to my boyfriend while we were sleeping and we are 99.9% certain of who stole it, so please keep an eye out at any parties or be aware if someone is trying to sell this.

Equipment missing: Pioneer DJM 909
Circumstances behind disappearance:

I was using it last night with a friend and took my friend home last night at 10:00. Came home and went to sleep doors locked. Roomate comes home at 4am and has to use key to enter. i wake up at 7:40 and go downstairs and notice equipment is gone.

Please if ANYONE hears anything about this piece of equipment please contact me at 717-545-1158 or 717-943-3006.

its a solid grayish black 2 channel mixer with a touch screen effects pad in the center. about 12" wide by 20" deep and 4" thick. I have the serial number so if anyone needs to check it against mine.

I am offering a $200, No questions asked reward for information leading to the reclamation of this item.

What is the craziest thing that happened to you while you were doing it?

Ha! This one is a no-brainer!

There we were, in front of the Maryland Faerie Festival 2005 crowd, dancing our little Shakra hearts out, when everything went wrong. Oh so horribly wrong. **Pause for uber dramatic effect** First, the roof just sort of, well, collapsed on Bronwen and I during our basket dance. (I'm pretty sure that was the last time we did that dance) We held it up while people scrambled to erect it. We continued. Then, as we are all spinning ferociously to a short afro-fusion piece, a stray ribbon somehow entwines itself around my neck. I didn't notice it until I could spin no more because my head was yanked back by the unyielding ribbon. Yep. I was nearly publicly decapitated. And for the grand finale! The music stops dead during Hilary's African solo. The clapping keeps her going until they get it back up…..but in a totally wrong section of the song. This lead to our finest Shakra moment ever….. Shakra Improv Theater! There was betrayal, there was death, and there was ballroom dancing.

It was definitely the craziest and most memorable dances I had ever been apart of. I think we may have pictures deep within the Shakra archives!
